On the Danube & the Romans
Part 2 of the Danube River cruise is all about the river itself – especially the narrows where the river goes through a gorge of limestone cliffs and caves. Bridges at sunrise either done or under construction showed the human impacts recently and in several places old Roman forts still confound ‘how?’
On the river and the gorge
Early mornings on the river as we traveled through the National Parks were spectacular.
With a village tucked under the hills here and there – but few.
The romans not only built forts, but a bridge … how they did that in these cliffs is mystery to me but not much remains.
This fort built in the ‘Rocks’ had 3 gates. Any enemy making it thru the 2nd gate was easy pickings for those above the 3rd gate – like ducks in a bucket. The cave-like structure was between first and second gates – sleeping or storage.
