Please drive carefully this autumn
Over the last 30 days, I rode my gravel bike over mostly the same route up the McKenzie, Mohawk rivers to destinations near Marcola, OR … basically go have great ride along the rivers (beautiful) and stretch out and sweat. So why a post?
Roadkill. On both rides, there were newly killed deer along the road. This between August and September. Is this normal between mid-August and early September? A dead deer every month? – the second one was a large buck w/ rack 5+. I asked two LLM (“AI”) tools about the cycle of roadkills in Oregon; basically, is there a seasonal pattern? (spoiler, YES!)
Claude had a clear answer

To check back on that response with another LLM, Microsoft’s Edge, said

It even went further with safety tips

It would not, however, create a file that I could easily share with you – legal reasons I guess. But, html was a free gift – if you can read it, do what you can to follow them to save lives … if you cannot read it, you could do this.
- go here: https://copilot.microsoft.com
- If you type:
- is there a season in oregon when more wildlife are killed on the roads than others, especially large mammals
- the same page I received should be before you
One step further, when asked, Claude created a poster

If the death rate is 1 per month over a 10 mile stretch of road, … a) what is it over all of OR; b) what will it be in October and November? … let’s be careful out there! (Hill Street Blues)

Great info!
Thanks
Happy that you found usefu! … I was surprised at both the cyclic increases and how consistent both AI sources were … i drove differently this morning before dawn to go hiking – always looking for those reflecting eyes off to the side.
