Durstan X-Mid Pro 1

Initially in 2024, I was going to continue using my old REI Flash 1 person backpacking tent. However, in planning 2024 adventures I had initially leaned into more backpacking and decided a new tent was needed for those plans (wild fires changed them, but much later).

I followed a product / supplier selection process that my old corporate life inserted into my decision making. I post that earlier with the process, criteria and data – Selection Process

Needless to say, the Durstan X-Mid Pro 1 won the contest and was purchased. My choice was the woven floor (not Dyneema) for more durability, with footprint and 6 stakes as needed. (all images from Durstan website)

Durstan has a good video of the tent and how to set up https://youtu.be/gwKxzJ0016s?list=TLGGjisgkQfLrXgyNzA5MjAyNA&t=2

After several trips this summer (from very early frosty spring to late hot summer), I love my Durstan and recommend it for those it fits – it’s not for everybody, but no gear really is, right?

What I like about the X-Mid Pro 1

First, everything just works perfectly and seems placed exactly where it needs to be when you need it. Two vestibules of size makes the tent practical too. Design with user in mind – a top user experience!

Second, moisture management was easy as long as I kept vents open – closed doors each night. One night I did wake up with ice on the ceiling, but one vent had closed (or wasn’t opened)

Third, weight and packability are top notch – a UL hiker pick

Fourth, Dan Durston is involved in the community and provides valuable feedback and experience to both the industry and hiking experiences – this really tipped the scale for my selection.

What I don’t like about the X-Mid Pro 1

First, any tent in this performance range is going to cost some money. My tent is the most expensive single piece of gear in my entire kit – except my camera. Durstan prices are not out of range but they are not the cheapest for obvious reasons, but one has to be ready for that price tag – I found worth it.

Second, tent site selection takes a bit longer as the surface area of the floor is a wider more rectangular. The tent just takes a bit more space than my old one.

Third, tent placement in high wind is important but I didn’t find troublesome – getting an angle into the wind I found important to keep things calmer.
