For a couple of nights and May Day, I made a home at Pine Rest<\/a> campground at Camp Sherman on the magical Metolius River<\/a>. Smith Rock and Camp Sherman have been my traditional gear shake-out for the first overnight of the season, but this year the extra 2 hours of driving couldn’t be rationalized for Smith Rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I landed at Pine Rest #5 (my favorite) mid-morning on Wednesday with warm sunny days ahead for 2 nights and 3 days of hiking around Camp Sherman and then McKenzie River trail on the way home Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being early season, campsite reservations are not enabled so all Camp Sherman sites are first come first serve (until May 23); several of the Camp Sherman campgrounds are closed – including Gorge, so pick carefully if you go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pine Rest is tent only and has 6 sites – all very close to the river. I set my tent as close to river as possible – the only negative about Pine Rest = raccoons. The raccoons are tenacious and capable – be warned! Other than those guys, Pine Rest for tents is HIGHLY recommended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
