Owls and a hawk

On recent Spencer’s Butte ramble (trip report), a couple of uncommon birds were encountered.

First, Barred Owls were 2x encountered but only 1x seen. The photo take was trash and the pair would not sit still – so photos are from Cornell Lab.

They have a very unique song and at first I thought I had travelled into some time warp into Mexico or Africa jungle and was listening to monkeys. https://macaulaylibrary.org/audio/125364

Second, due to the lack of leaves early in the year, the predators were out in force (and the prey was equally out) … A sharp-shinned hawk … a bit smaller than most hawks, but way fast thru the trees. By the time I saw, it … poof! gone.
